NEON Festival Poster Design

In 2013, the city of Norfolk, VA began transforming a stretch of street into a thriving arts destination. Volunteers, artists, and entrepreneurs came together to transform the block and bring a wave of passion and creativity to downtown Norfolk. The district soon became known as the NEON District, which stands for “The New Energy of Norfolk.” In 2015, the first NEON Festival was born. This is a four-day celebration of the energy and light in Norfolk’s arts districts and features artists, live performances, and food vendors.

In partnership with AIGA and in contribution to the 2nd annual NEON Festival, I designed a poster to convey my interpretation of “The New Energy of Norfolk” and submitted it to the juried SPARK Poster exhibition. The poster was chosen to be screen printed by a local company, Prince Ink, and sold at the event with proceeds going to benefit the AIGA Hampton Roads annual programming.

Project type: Personal Side Project

Moodboard & Brainstorming

To express community and unity, I interwove the words NFK (Norfolk) and NEON (New Energy of Norfolk). Within the letters, I added various patterns to represent all the contributors that made the NEON District possible. I wanted it to encompass the spirit of the district.
